OpenAI, Google models take gold at ICPC contest
This year’s ICPC World Finals had a twist.
Alongside 139 of the best university programming teams, two AI models took the stage under the same contest rules as human competitors.
The results were eye-opening.
1. OpenAI’s GPT-5 solved all 12 out of 12 problems, something no human team has ever done at ICPC.
2. Google’s Gemini 2.5 Deep Think finished with 10 out of 12 problems, earning a gold medal spot and even solving one problem that no human team could crack.
3. The top human team scored 11/12, an incredible achievement in itself.
This is not the first time AI has shown its skills in competitions. We’ve seen gold medals at the IMO and IOI, and even a silver finish at the AtCoder Finals. But ICPC is different—it’s long, intense, and requires problem-solving under real pressure.
Seeing AI models perform at this level shows how quickly the technology is moving. It doesn’t take away from human talent—it highlights how far the bar is being raised.
The story of competitive programming is no longer just about human vs. human. It’s becoming about how humans and AI together can push what’s possible.
